Copy Your Clothes - Make a Pattern From a Garment You Love
You know that top you've worn so many times it's basically disintegrating?
Or that vintage find you wish you could have in five different fabrics? Or the designer piece you tried on and thought, I could make that.
If you’ve thought the above, this is the workshop for you :)
Over one weekend you'll learn how to take a garment you love and turn it into a fully workable paper pattern, without having to unpicking a single stitch. You'll leave with a pattern you can use again and again, and create it in whatever fabric and colour you like.
Your’ll build the skills to recreate the things you actually love, & that work for your body 💛
👇🏻 Who this is for
This workshop is open to those who feel confident in sewing up a garment and are able to read and use pre-exisiting patterns.
You don't need to be a pattern cutter to attend, just open to learning a new skills and follow technical instructions.
It's perfect if you have a garment you've worn to death and want to replicate. Or a vintage piece you want to recreate. Or you're simply curious about how pattern cutting actually works and want a practical, hands-on introduction.
One thing to bear in mind: bring something relatively simple; a top, a dress, or a shirt with just a few pattern pieces. Cotton or a sturdy woven fabric works best. Avoid jersey, stretch fabrics, or anything heavily tailored as we want the weekend to feel enjoyable and achievable, not overwhelming.
🤓 What you'll learn
How to measure and trace a garment accurately onto pattern paper without unpicking anything.
How to add seam allowance, mark grain lines, notches and drill holes so your pattern is properly workable.
How to label your pattern pieces professionally so you can use them again and again.
How to make small pattern adjustments; changing the length, adjusting a neckline, hem width ect.
How to cut your pattern pieces in fabric and understand the order of construction so you're ready to sew at home.
What you'll leave with
A complete, fully labelled paper pattern of your chosen garment, ready to cut and stitch in fabric of your choice. Plus, new confidence in your pattern cutting skills allowing you to copy and recreate other garments.
How the weekend works
Day One We'll start with measuring and tracing your garment, taking our time to get it right. You'll learn how to read what you're looking at, understand grain lines, and begin building out your pattern pieces.
Day Two We'll refine and complete your pattern, add all the professional markings, make any adjustments you want, and talk through construction so you feel confident sewing it up at home.
By Sunday afternoon you'll have a complete pattern and a clear plan for what comes next.
What to bring
Your garment - please send a photo in advance so I can check it's suitable. A collarless top, simple dress, or shirt works well for a first time.
Tools: mechanical pencil, rubber, tape measure, paper and fabric scissors, pins, tracing wheel, pattern cutting ruler or curve, notcher, awl, notebook.
I'll provide pattern paper and have spare tools available if needed. Teas and coffees throughout both days. Bring your own lunch or pick something up nearby — I'll share local recommendations when you book.
